The 'Personal Element' in Cheating
To the Editor:
After a decade of reviewing academic-misconduct cases, I found myself a little saddened by James M. Lang's suggestion that faculty members should never take cheating personally because students don't mean it that way ("It's Not You," Careers, October 26). Doubtless the same could be said about a lot of humans' bad behavior, much of which occurs without a personal grudge against the victims.
However, I cannot help but feel there is an irreducibly personal element
