The panel's title -- "For American Studies Scholars Who Have Considered Suicide When the U.S. Is Just Too Much" -- sounded made to order, its witty nod to Ntozake Shange a good sign, or signifier. Organizers plainly wanted the session to serve as Ground Zero of this month's American Studies Association meeting here, an impromptu agora for those who could use one.
