Six days a week, Julie Roe walks to her neighborhood YMCA here, a 111-year-old building with worn hardwood floors and mahogany doors. She feels at home on the basketball court, where sunlight pours through a row of long windows and the squeak of sneakers echoes off the walls.

Ms. Roe made a name for herself with a basketball in her hand. In college she averaged 22 points a game and earned All-American honors.
