Moving is never fun, but moving onto a college campus is an epic drag. No other event requires anxious teenagers and their parents to navigate unfamiliar terrain, find a place to park, and then lug mini-fridges up four flights of stairs. The grueling activity is like an Olympic event, complete with hugs and crying at the end.

For a long time, this annual rite of passage was an exercise in mayhem, and colleges were rather laissez-faire about the whole thing. In recent years, however,
