The Man Behind the World's Most-Watched College Rankings
When Nian Cai Liu posted his first ranking of the world's top 500 universities on Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Web site, in June 2003, he thought the list might interest Chinese education officials, along with a few scholars of higher education. Instead he got a torrent of news-media attention, e-mail messages, and personal appeals from top university administrators far and wide.
"We knew it was the first global ranking, but we never expected anything like this impact," said Mr. Liu
