Rising insurance rates trouble medical-school professors and threaten residency programs

It was 4 p.m. on Friday, the day before this summer's graduation, and it should have been a time to relax and celebrate. Instead, Michael Maples was on the phone, frantically trying to line up malpractice insurance that would allow three family-practice residency programs, with 36 faculty members and 70 doctors in training, to remain open on Monday.
