The 'Last Crusade' of Martin Luther King Jr.

Christopher Phelps makes many eloquent and trenchant observations in his fine survey of official memory, civil-rights scholarship, and King scholarship ("The Prophet Reconsidered," The Chronicle Review, January 18). Martin Luther King Jr. did in fact call for a major restructuring of the Jericho road that produces society's beggars. I am very grateful for Phelps's appreciation of my own, Michael K. Honey's, and Clayborne Carson's work.
