The Importance of Really Reading, Rather Than Skimming
To the Editor:
Lindsay Waters's frontal attack on speed reading is, I think, an argument for a comprehensive whole-language approach to the teaching of reading and the other language arts ("Time for Reading," The Chronicle Review, February 9).
As an elementary-school teacher for over 30 years, I disagree with his wholesale indictment of whole-language teaching. To me, this critical approach ... buttresses and is buttressed by phonics, thematic approaches, and moral questioning
