The Importance of Editing Reference Books
To the Editor:
I greatly appreciated Thomas H. Benton's "Reference Works and Academic Celebrity" (Careers, December 9). As one who has worked as a reference editor for the past 15 years, most recently as editor in chief of the recently published The Encyclopedia of New York State (Syracuse University Press), I share the author's conviction that large-scale reference works are among the most enduring of scholarly publications.
