When Jan E. Dizard isn't teaching environmental studies at Amherst College, he likes to hunt. Whether armed with a shotgun in the woods or source material in the classroom, he says, he must pay attention to detail, survey his surroundings, aim at a target, and hope for a hit.

"Fortunately for my students, I'm a much better teacher than I am a shot," he says.
