The article on stem cells in the October 1 issue does a good job of describing the current state of embryonic-stem-cell research in the United States ("Stem-Cell Research Moves Forward," The Chronicle). However, it is important to strongly emphasize that this research is at a critical crossroad because of the funding restrictions that were put in place in August 2001.
