The Failures of Prisons
To the Editor:
Jeffrey J. Williams, now a professor of English and literary and cultural studies, describes his years as a corrections officer in New York State ("The Professor Was a Prison Guard," The Chronicle Review, April 6).
His essay discusses training for CO's, routine prison operations, the attitudes of CO's toward inmates, prison culture, and other matters. Williams describes all this well, but regrettably the piece contains little analysis except for the last sentence:
