The clerk who buzzed me into the small bookshop near the Damascus Gate to Jerusalem's Old City was something of a novelty: an Israeli who could not speak English. Yet by intoning the cursed name "Eichmann" again and again, I finally prodded her to produce what had brought me to the bookseller: the transcripts of the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, freshly translated into English, and published in a nine-volume series.
