The Class of 1999: Where Are They Now?

We checked in with five academic departments to see where their graduates are headed this year. Since campuses track their graduates differently, the information they gave varied from institution to institution. Here is what they reported:


New York University
American-studies program

Five students were granted Ph.D.'s in 1999:

  • Two have tenure-track faculty positions:
         -one in American studies at the University of Rochester
         -one in music at the New School University
  • Two have postdoctoral fellowships:
         -one in humanities at Haverford College
         -one in African-American studies at the University of Illinois
  • One has a research position in science studies at the National Institutes of Health.

Duke University
Department of English

Six students were granted Ph.D.'s in 1999:

  • Two have tenure-track faculty positions:
         -one in English at Yale University
         -one in English at the University of Michigan
  • Three have non-tenure-track faculty positions:
         -one in drama and writing at Duke
         -one in English at Duke
         -one in English at Williams College
  • One has a teaching position in the Alamance-Burlington School System in Burlington, N.C.

University of Washington
Department of sociology

Eight students were granted Ph.D.'s in 1999:

  • Three have jobs in the private sector:
         -one works for two private research outfits
         -one is a computer consultant
         -one is a researcher in private industry
  • Two have postdoctoral fellowships in sociology at the University of Washington.
  • Two have tenure-track faculty positions:
         -one at the University of Iowa
         -one at the College of William and Mary
  • The plans of one are unknown.

University of California at Los Angeles
Interdepartmental Ph.D. program for neuroscience

Twelve students were granted Ph.D.'s between July 1998 and June 1999:

  • Three have returned to complete medical school at U.C.L.A.
  • One is doing a medical residency in orthopedic surgery in North Carolina.
  • Six have postdoctoral fellowships:
         -two at U.C.L.A.
         -one at the University of California at San Diego
         -one at Harvard University
         -one in Maryland
         -one at the University of Oxford
  • One is seeking an academic administrative position.
  • One is seeking a consulting position.

Purdue University
School of Education

Eight students were granted Ph.D.'s in curriculum and instruction in the spring of 1999:

  • One has a postdoctoral fellowship (location unknown).
  • One has an administrative/management job at the University of Notre Dame.
  • Three have tenure-track faculty positions:
         -one at Purdue
         -two unknown
  • The plans of three are unknown.

Four students were granted Ph.D.'s in educational studies in the spring of 1999:

  • Three have administrative/management jobs:
         -one at the International School of Stavanger, in Stavanger, Norway
         -the institutions of two are unknown
  • The plans of one are unknown.
