The Choice to Be Fat
To the Editor:
I was outraged by your reporter's comparison of "fat studies" to disabled studies and lesbian/gay studies ("A 'Fat Studies' Scholar No Longer Fits the Picture," The Chronicle, June 30).
One does not choose to be disabled, nor does one choose one's sexual orientation. Yet, clearly, Kathleen LeBesco chose both to gain and then to lose weight. Nobody forced her to eat Ben & Jerry's ice cream or Kentucky Fried Chicken.
