The Cat People
Twenty years ago, Stanford University was swarming with cats. Stray and feral, sick and hungry, some 500 to 1,500 roamed the campus. And the number seemed even higher to people who recoiled at the creatures.
"Their coats were really ragged," says Herb Fong, Stanford's longtime grounds manager. "They had stuff oozing out of all their orifices."
