The CV Doctor: CV For a New Ph.D. in Psychology

This candidate, who is well-qualified for a faculty position, was willing to see how her vita would look as a résumé for a position in training and development. We felt that her vita for a faculty position, while clear and well-organized, was a bit long, so we've offered a few suggestions in the footnotes for how to cut it down to size.

.) Reducing the font of the CV by a point would save a little space, as would formatting it to use fewer lines to convey the basic information about a position, such as the title, institution, and date.

.) It would be helpful if the candidate added the name of her dissertation adviser to the "Education" section of her vita.

.) Sections that could be added prominently in the vita are "Research Interests" and "Teaching Interests." A sentence or two of description is all that's necessary on each.

.) The dissertation and thesis information doesn't need to be repeated in the "Research Experience" section.

.) For the "Grant Experience" section, the descriptive material about the role the author played could be omitted.

.) If the candidate is seeking a faculty position, the section on "Clinical Experience" doesn't need so much descriptive material. If she decides to apply for a position at a university counseling center, then she might condense the sections on teaching, research, and grants, while leaving the clinical detail.

.) The long list of workshops and training sessions, assuming they were delivered to students, do not need to be detailed here.

.) When several positions are listed at the same institution, another space-saving technique is to list the institution only once, with the additional information under it. This could be done, for instance, with the teaching and research experience at the University of Oklahoma that she lists under "Related Experience."

.) The long list of community-service activities could be presented more consisely.
