The Banner That Binds Us

On September 12, 2001, I was standing on the corner of 78th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan, just a few yards from where I live, when a firetruck passed. Now this is a pretty ordinary occurrence -- my neighborhood firehouse is just seven blocks north, on 85th Street, so the firetrucks pass
