The 'Animal House' Life at Duke U.
To the Editor:
In his opinion piece on changing the culture of Duke University, William H. Chafe makes the claim that students at Duke "work intensely" and "work hard/play hard" ("Out of Ugliness, a Beloved Community," The Chronicle Review, May 12). The facts belie these claims. Full-time students at Duke on average spend less than 25 hours a week in class or studying. This is hardly working hard or intensely.
