Texas Southern Puts President on Leave

The president of Texas Southern University, Priscilla D. Slade, was placed on paid leave by the university’s regents on Thursday, while an investigation expands into her use of Texas Southern funds for personal expenses, the Houston Chronicle reported today.

The inquiry initially concerned Ms. Slade’s spending of $85,000 on furnishings and $138,159 on landscaping for her new home, but now it will cover her other acquisitions with university money. Neither Ms. Slade nor the regents spoke to reporters, the Houston Chronicle said, and no interim president was named.

The regents also announced the resignation of Texas Southern’s chief financial officer, who was found to have been convicted on nine previous occasions of passing bad checks.
