Students at Texas A&M University at Galveston are resuming classes on their home campus today after damage from Hurricane Ike forced them to spend a semester inland at the system’s flagship campus, in College Station, the Associated Press reported this morning.
About 91 percent of the students who were enrolled when Ike slammed ashore on September 13 have returned, said Karen Bigley, a campus spokeswoman. Students began moving back into their dormitories on Friday.
More than 1,500 students were relocated from the marine-oriented Galveston campus to College Station, 150 miles inland. The main campus accommodated them in spare rooms and makeshift classrooms.
A statement on the Galveston campus’s Web site describes the city as being “in full recovery mode.” Extensive testing was performed before students returned to make sure the environment was safe and healthy. —Katherine Mangan
