Teikyo University in Tax Trouble
The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau has levied a $17-million fine on affiliates of Teikyo University, ruling that the university had evaded taxes.
The bureau has also filed criminal charges, stemming from the alleged tax evasion, against the brother of the university's president. The university -- part of the Teikyo group, whose educational institutions in a number of nations include two in the United States -- has denied the allegations.
