Taking Credit for Someone Else's Work

Your reporter Scott Smallwood was exactly right when he characterized the alleged theft of the ideas of a Cornell University graduate student, Antonia Demas, by one of her faculty advisers, David A. Levitsky, as "a stark case of academic misappropriation" ("Bitter Aftertaste," April 12).

What I find most appalling in this sordid case is the behavior of university officials, especially Peter Stein, dean of the faculty. When Ms. Demas first brought charges within
