Sylvan Buys Major Stake in Walden University
The venture-capital arm of Sylvan Learning Systems announced plans this month to buy 41 percent of Walden University, a for-profit online graduate institution, for $32.8-million. For Sylvan, perhaps best known for its tutoring franchises, the deal marks the company's largest single investment in online higher education.
Walden University, which is based in Minneapolis but has no brick-and-mortar classroom facilities, has a long history in both correspondence
