This spring is witnessing the last class of students who were required to pass a swimming test in order to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Associated Press reported today. The test has been annoying to some UNC students, terrifying to others (The Chronicle, May 23, 2003). The demise of the test at Chapel Hill marked one more milestone in the steady decline of this once-common requirement for college graduation (The Chronicle, October 12, 1994).
