Sweatshop Protesters Stage Sit-In at U. of Michigan President's Office

Students at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor began a sit-in on Tuesday at the office of the institution’s president, Mary Sue Coleman, demanding that the college follow its own rules about the factories that make university-logo apparel, the Detroit News reported.

Sit-ins and student protests about working conditions at overseas factories producing college apparel roiled many college campuses in 1999 and 2000. At the time, student protesters were primarily attempting to persuade administrators to join the Worker Rights Consortium, which was seen as being less favorable to the apparel industry than its competitor, the Fair Labor Association.

Both nongovernmental organizations continue to operate, but sit-ins on the issue have been rare. —Martin Van Der Werf
