Suspect in Hoax at San Diego State U. Faces Felony Charge

After an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a 32-year-old Web designer was charged Thursday with making Wednesday’s online threat to kill 50 San Diego State University students. The threat was quickly determined to be a hoax.

According to the Associated Press, Cristobal Fernando Gonzalez was charged in federal court with making a threatening communication via the Internet.

The wire service said Mr. Gonzalez told FBI investigators that he had posted the ostensibly anonymous threat to his own Web page and alerted a local television station — all as a way of generating publicity for his Web site. —Lawrence Biemiller
