Suspect in Campus Murder Is Mother of Victim's Roommate

The mother of a student at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne has confessed to killing her daughter’s roommate, the Journal Gazette, a local newspaper, reported on Monday.

The suspect, Tina Loraine Morris, had been staying in the students’ campus apartment for two weeks before the killing, according to court documents cited by the Journal Gazette. Last Friday, the documents said, she confronted one of her daughter’s two roommates, Liette Martinez, about her conduct with Ms. Morris’s daughter the night before. Ms. Morris then stabbed Ms. Martinez repeatedly and fled in her car, the court documents said.

University officials were not aware that Ms. Morris had been living in the apartment, the newspaper reported. It was not clear why she had taken up residence on the campus.

The university plans to review several policies related to safety and housing in response to the case, the Journal Gazette reported. Last Friday campus officials activated their emergency-alert system about an hour after discovering the crime scene, but they were not pleased with the system’s performance.

“Quite frankly, it didn’t go out as quickly as we wanted it to,” Walt Branson, vice chancellor for financial affairs, told the Journal Gazette. Administrators also planned to inspect security cameras, increase patrols, examine guest policies, and discuss adding more resident advisers and residence-hall monitors, who would sit at the entrance to each building, the newspaper reported.

At the same time, the university’s chancellor, Michael Wartell, noted that Ms. Martinez’s death was the first violent crime on the campus in its 40-year history, and he urged parents and students not to worry. “I don’t think that you can look at life anywhere in this country,” he told the Journal Gazette, “and say that anywhere is totally secure.” —Sara Lipka
