Survey of Top Research Universities Shows Downturn in Federal Spending
Total spending on academic scientific research grew slightly in 2007. But the amount financed by the federal government fell when inflation was factored in, according to a report that also ranked the top research institutions by the money they got. Universities often made up the difference from their own pockets — but they weren't happy about it.
