Supreme Court Declines to Hear Appeal on Preservation of Federal Records

The Supreme Court last week declined to hear an appeal by historians and librarians who oppose a regulation that allows federal agencies to destroy electronic records once paper copies are preserved.

The National Archives and Records Administration, which sets government policy for preserving federal records, issued a rule in 1995 permitting agencies to wipe out e-mail messages and other electronic data to avoid taxing computer systems once a printed copy exists.
