Supreme Court Clears Way for Settlement of College-Desegregation Case

The U.S. Supreme Court declined last week to hear an appeal seeking to overturn a $503-million plan to settle Mississippi's long-running college-desegregation lawsuit.

Many of the original plaintiffs in the case oppose the settlement, arguing that it would leave intact historical inequities in higher education for black students in the state, and had asked the court to reject the plan.
