Sun Microsystems Makes Its Software Free for Students and Faculty Members
Sun Microsystems is giving students and professors a free ride. The company announced last week that it would no longer charge them for nearly 100 software products, including programming tools.
Excluded from the offer, which Sun values at $1-billion, are college administrators. They will continue to pay the usual license fees.
Colleges must sign up to receive the software, although they don't have to pay anything or buy Sun products to do so.
