The University System of Maryland has joined the movement to refrain from investing assets in companies that do business in Sudan, as a way of protesting what the university’s foundation described as their complicity in the genocide in the country’s Darfur region. According to a news release issued on Thursday, the Maryland system does not have any current investments in Sudan, but has directed its money managers to avoid them in the future. In taking such action, Maryland added its name to a list of other institutions that have banned Sudan investments, including the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Washington.
