Stupidity and Faith

To the Editor:

It would seem that Richard Lynn has defined stupidity in a somewhat circular fashion ("Are Religious People Stupid?," Critical Mass, The Chronicle Review, June 27). He thinks that religious faith reflects stupidity and that, therefore, people of religious faith must in fact be stupid.

Since that is a perception based on — dare I say it — a belief, Lynn seems to be quite happy putting his faith in his own self-defined intellect. However, there
