Studying the Ritual of the MLA Conference
It's January. For many scholars, the big academic conference season has just ended. Papers: presented. Interviews: concluded. Cards: exchanged. Bonnie D. Irwin, an associate professor of English at Eastern Illinois University, is working on a study of the rituals, behaviors, and costumes associated with scholarly conferences. She presented a piece of her work on the final day of the Modern Language Association's annual meeting.
