Studying the Lives of Philosophers
To the Editor:
Biographies help promote a better understanding of the ideas of philosophers, though comprehending the ideas these philosophers promote does not necessarily require a historical understanding of the lives of the philosophers ("The Life and the Mind," June 7). Biographies help introduce philosophers to readers on a basic, human level. ... This human understanding of philosophers facilitates our wanting to understand what they are trying to tell us.
