Studying the Bible

To the Editor:

You published three letters ("Ecumenism, Secularism, and Biblical Scholarship," Letters to the Editor, The Chronicle Review, January 12) about my November 10 essay titled "What's Wrong With the Society of Biblical Literature?" I was happy to read them, even more so given that the society deployed its usual "won't dignify with a response" strategy. It has used this strategy (to uncertain advantage) in the face of nearly every public criticism of it in the last
