Study Finds Anxiety Over Flood of Anxiety Disorders in Campus Counseling Centers

College students are flocking to campus mental-health centers in record numbers, according to a report released today by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. The report, “Anxiety Disorders on Campus: The Growing Need for College Mental-Health Services,” echoes previous findings in a survey of mental health and counseling services on campuses. It says that students’ demand for psychological counseling has grown, particularly for anxiety disorders such as social anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

More students are aware of mental-health issues, the report says, and increasing numbers arrive at college with a history of mental illness or are already taking psychiatric medication. The report also suggests that campus mental-health services may be overtaxed and that policies limiting the number of free counseling sessions they offer may make it difficult for students with anxiety disorders to get adequate treatment. —Paula Wasley
