Study-Abroad Program in Venezuela Results in Temporary House Arrest

A study-abroad trip to Venezuela this year ended with a form of house arrest for a group of students from Union College in Nebraska, according to the Associated Press. The 21 students were part of an international rescue-and-relief program and traveled to the South American country in early February to study tropical medicine and humanitarian relief.

About a month after they arrived, the government questioned whether the group had permission to be in the country and confined the students and their chaperones to the Venezuelan campus where they were studying while their paperwork was checked. After a week, the college decided to abort the trip, but the group did not get government clearance to leave the country until April 6. Most of the students arrived back in the United States this week. —Beth McMurtrie
