Global Learning Semesters, a study-abroad service based in the United States that offers a program in Cyprus, has posted the following message on SECUSS-L, an e-mail list for study-abroad professionals. One of the subscribers to the list suggested that The Chronicle repost the message, which is addressed to college officials who are concerned about the welfare of their students who are being evacuated from Lebanon:
To my study-abroad colleagues at U.S. colleges and universities,
As you may know, most American citizens in Lebanon are currently being evacuated via Cyprus.
We are a U.S. study-abroad organization with a home base in Nicosia, Cyprus, and have been contacted by U.S. study-abroad offices that are trying to evacuate their students from Lebanon.
We wanted to extend any assistance we can offer to the whole U.S. study-abroad community. Specifically, we have local staff that might be able to give advice or assistance to U.S. study-abroad students or academic colleagues that are being evacuated from Lebanon. We also have a limited amount of housing in Nicosia that can be made temporarily available.
Note: We do not have any means for evacuating U.S. citizens from Lebanon; that should be handled by the U.S. Embassy; but once the evacuees are in Cyprus, we might be able to give some guidance.
I am, myself, currently in Cyprus on a staff retreat; Cyprus is safe and stable, and daily life is unaffected by the Lebanon evacuation.
How to contact us: Local Cyprus number: 011 357 99 609 906 (Elena Kashi) U.S. main number: (877) 300-7010 (Please leave a message as most of our U.S. staff is in Cyprus until Monday for our annual meeting. We will be checking our messages.) E-mail: antonispolemitis@globalsemesters.com, sandismith@globalsemesters.com, elenakashi@globalsemesters.com (Please email all three.)
Warm regards, Dr. Sandi Smith Director of University Relations Global Learning Semesters
