Students at St. Louis U. Plumb the Math Behind M.C. Escher
For people like herself, says Anneke Bart, math is like a puzzle. "We sit around and play with pictures and dink around," says the professor of mathematics. That's how, faced with a tough question, she and her colleagues at Saint Louis University can come up with an answer that fits. Her course, "Mathematics and the Art of M.C. Escher," is a chance for her to share that approach with 18 freshmen and sophomores who want to fulfill their math requirement without taking calculus.
