Students Lose Appeal in Lawsuit Over Coeducation at College in Virginia

The Virginia Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by nine students who sought to overturn Randolph-Macon Woman’s College’s decision to admit men, according to The News & Advance, a newspaper in Lynchburg, Va.

The students filed suit shortly after the college annnounced plans last year to begin coeducation, citing financial reasons, with the class that matriculates this fall. The students, backed by some alumnae, said the college had not alerted them when they enrolled that men might soon be admitted. They also said that they had purposely chosen to attend an all-female college, and that the college should remain women-only at least until they graduated.

A Virginia judge dismissed the lawsuit in January, and the college, now called Randolph College, is set to enroll its first class with men this fall. —Andrew Mytelka
