Students Arrested as Terrorism Suspects Are Released in Britain but Face Deportation

All of the men arrested in high-profile antiterrorism raids two weeks ago in Britain have been released without charges, according to the BBC. “The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided there was insufficient evidence to press charges — or even to convince magistrates to allow police to hold the men any longer,” the news service reported.

Ten of the men were Pakistani nationals in Britain on student visas, and their arrests prompted widespread alarm about the apparent ease with which would-be terrorists were able to take advantage of loopholes in the student-visa system to gain entry to Britain.

Eleven of the 12 men who were arrested now face deportation proceedings, the BBC reported, “on grounds of national security.” The final suspect is a British national. —Aisha Labi
