Full-time first-year students at public universities in the Canadian province of New Brunswick are finding their tuition bills for the second semester reduced by 2,000 Canadian dollars, or about $1,700, thanks to a new policy of the provincial government, the CBC reported. The government, which was elected in September, had promised to help first-year students stay — an important issue since New Brunswick has the worst record of freshman retention in Canada. The government is sending the money, which amounts to about half a year’s tuition and fees, directly to the universities. Some critics of the policy say the money would be better spent if the aid were based on students’ need.
