The Tallahassee Democrat said on Wednesday that it had purchased FSView & Florida Flambeau, the campus newspaper at Florida State University. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
A newspaper-industry analyst quoted in an Associated Press report said that the acquisition was the first of its kind and was likely to be part of efforts by the Democrat to increase its share of the local market by trying to grab student readers.
The campus newspaper, which The Chronicle profiled in 2001, is published twice a week during the academic year and once a week over the summer. The paper will continue to be student-run, the Democrat said, and its mission would not change. Students working on the paper would have expanded opportunities to work at the parent publication and at its corporate parent, the Gannett Company.
