Stony Brook in $35-Million Deal to Buy Campus

Long Island University sent out a news release this morning with the intriguing notice that it and the State University of New York at Stony Brook would make a “major announcement” on Friday about LIU’s Southampton Graduate Campus. But Newsday had already scooped the story. The newspaper reported that the universities would sign a $35-million deal that will enable Stony Brook to take over the Southampton campus. The news, confirmed by university officials, was praised by students, alumni, and others who feared that the campus would simply be closed. LIU shut down Southampton’s undergraduate programs last fall to save money.
