New York’s state health department has cited Stony Brook University Hospital for violations associated with the deaths of three children between May and July, and shut down the hospital’s pediatric cardiac surgery program, the Associated Press reports.
The health department said it would not allow the program to resume until Stony Brook had hired a qualified full-time surgeon and had affiliated with another hospital specializing in heart surgery for children.
Dr. Richard Fine, dean of the university’s school of medicine, said in a statement that the hospital is working to correct the problems. .
