Staying Human While Teaching Humanities

Lisa Ruddick's essay ("The Near Enemy of the Humanities Is Professionalism," The Review, November 23) is a heartbreaking piece of confession -- heartbreaking in the manifest anguish of someone who fears she is abandoning or betraying a profession and her colleagues in it; in its description of the violence done to graduate students in the name of professional training; and perhaps most in its failure to mention undergraduate students at all. ...
