Michigan State U. eliminates independent research centers, resists urge to grow bigger
Michigan State University is big by any measure, with 579 buildings, 46,000 students, and 240 study-abroad programs.
But the university, which was among the first agricultural colleges in the nation and served as a model for the 1862 federal act that created land-grant colleges, wrestles constantly with pressure to grow bigger.
