States Make Plans to Fit Higher Education to Tight Budgets
Policy makers in many states will spend the 2010 legislative sessions struggling with how to preserve the missions of their public colleges in the face of budget shortfalls and growing student demand.
Many of the proposals to help colleges cope with financial restraints rely on freeing institutions from some state regulations or consolidating academic programs. Legislators and governors in some places are considering campus mergers.
